Passport Services by Mail
 

You may renew your passport by Courier/Mail if your most recent U.S. Passport is: 

  • Undamaged and can be submitted with your application;
  • Was issued when you were aged 16 or older;
  • Was issued within the last 15 years;
  • Was issued in your current name or you can legally document your name change by U.S. Court Order or Marriage Certificate;
  • Was valid for 10 years

If the above statements do not apply to you, you must schedule an appointment and apply for the passport in person (includes renewals for children under the age of 16).  Click on "Passport Services in Person" on the left-hand navigation bar and follow the instructions that describe your situation.  

Note:  If you have an emergency limited-validity passport issued at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate outside the United States that was issued less than one year ago, you may renew your passport by courier or mail, provided you meet all of the above criteria.  Please follow this link for full instructionsIf your emergency passport was issued more than one year ago, please follow the instructions on this page.

Special Requirements for All Minors Aged 16 & 17

Special Requirements for those who have changed their name through Marriage or by a U.S. Court Order and their passport was issued within the last 12 months.

Please review the following FIVE STEPS before beginning your application

Step 1 - Complete Form DS-82, Application for a U.S. Passport

Applicants are required to complete the passport application form DS-82: Please ignore pages one and two of the printed instruction pages, as they do not apply when applying for your passport in the United Kingdom.  The form must be printed on separate sheets of paper; do NOT print this form on front and back of the same sheet. Step 2 - Supporting Documents

If any of the following apply in your case, you are required to submit:

  • Your most recent U.S. passport: This passport will be cancelled and returned to you with your new passport; 
  • If your most recent U.S passport was an emergency passport, issued under 22 CFR 51.41 and/or 22 CFR 51.28 (check the endorsement on the last page of your passport), you are also required to submit proof of citizenship (if your endorsement specifies 22 CFR 51.41):
    • a U.S. birth certificate; a U.S. naturalization certificate;
    • a U.S. certificate of citizenship;
    • a U.S. consular report of birth abroad; or
    • an expired passport
  • Or Proof of Identity (if your endorsement specifies 22 CFR 51.28):
    • a valid passport of any country;
    • a valid driver's license with photograph;
    • a national identity card with photograph;
    • a valid U.S. or State government ID card; or
    • a U.S. military ID card;
  • Foreign naturalization certificate: If you have naturalized as a citizen of a foreign country since your last passport was issued, please provide a photocopy of your foreign naturalization certificate and a statement regarding your intentions when you naturalized (i.e. whether or not it was your intention to relinquish your U.S. citizenship when you naturalized as a foreign citizen);
  • Original Marriage Certificate or U.S. Court Order showing change of name. 

 Step 3 - Pay the applicable fee

The application fee is $110.00. Accepted payment methods are:

  • Credit card - Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or Diners Club,  or Debit card - Visa or Mastercard only using the Card Payment Form.  Card payment form (PDF - 101kb);
  • International Money Order to the exact U.S. dollar amount made payable to the "United States Disbursing Officer;" or
  • Banker's Draft drawn in U.S. dollars only on a bank in the United States made payable to the "United States Disbursing Officer."

Money Orders and Banker's Drafts must have been issued within the last five months.   If you are enclosing more than one application, you should send only one money order.  Please note: We are not authorized to accept personal checks. We will not accept cash by mail/courier nor overpayment.  You may download the credit card payment slip by clicking on this link. Finally, please note that the fee is a  non-refundable processing fee and is retained by the Department of State  whether or not the passport is issued 

Step 4 - Passport Photographs

Applicants must provide one passport photograph: We will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements. Vending machine photographs and photographs printed on a home computer are unacceptable.

Step 5 - Submitting the Application
