Applying for the re-issuance of Diplomatic & International Organization Visas in the United States

Holders of diplomatic and international organization visas and their dependents who are in the United States in either the "A" or "G" visa category may renew their visas, in exceptional circumstances, while in the United States. For further information, you should contact the Office of Diplomatic Liaison at the Department of State at (202) 663-1213, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, between the hours of 2 pm and 4 pm (Eastern Time). Please note: Effective September 16, 2002, holders of A-3 and G-5 visas are no longer able to apply for visas while in the United States; they are required to apply at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad.

If you are in the United States under another visa category and you accept employment with a diplomatic mission or an international organization you must obtain a change of status before commencing employment with the mission or international organization. Applicants requesting a change of status to either the "A" or "G" category should first submit Form I-566 to the Office of Protocol. Upon receipt of the signed Form I-566 from the Office of Protocol, the foreign mission or international organization should then contact the Diplomatic Liaison Office on (202)-663-1213, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays), between the hours of 2 PM to 4 PM (Eastern Time), for information on specific documentation to be submitted

If the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) grants a change of status to the "A" or "G" category, the Diplomatic Liaison Office (CA/VO/P/D) will then issue the "A" or "G" visa. The foreign mission, however, must submit Form DS-1648 (Application for Visa) accompanied by the applicant’s passport, a passport-size photo, and the Form I-94 (Arrival-Departure Record) reflecting the change of status. For additional information, the foreign mission or international organization should contact the Diplomatic Liaison Office (CA/VO/P/D) on (202) 663-1213, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays), between the hours of 2 pm to 4 pm (Eastern Time). This office will also answer questions on visa renewal for military personnel.
