05 July 2007 (2100 BST) UK Threat Level Changed to Severe
On July 4, 2007, following the arrest of those involved in terrorist incidents in London and Glasgow the previous week, the UK government lowered the threat level from "critical" to "severe." This means that future terrorist attacks are still considered to be highly likely, but no longer thought to be imminent.
Both the US and the UK stress that public vigilance is always important regardless of the threat level. Like the US, the UK shares its national threat levels with the general public to keep everyone informed and explain the context for the various increased security measures that may be encountered. UK threat levels are determined by the UK Home Office, based upon information provided by the Security Service (MI5) and the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, and are posted on the Home Office website at http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/security/current-threat-level/
Information from MI5 about the reasons for the increased threat level and actions the public can take can be found on the MI5 website at http://www.mi5.gov.uk/
For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov. The U.S. Embassy in London also maintains a website at http://london.usembassy.gov. In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.
