Warden Messages
30 June 2007 Warden Message from U.S. Embassy London UK Threat Level Raised to Critical
Following terrorist incidents in London on June 29, and Glasgow on June
30, the UK government raised the UK threat level from "severe" to
"critical."
This means that a terrorist attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat. Both the US and the UK stress that public vigilance is always important
regardless of the threat level, but it is especially important given the
current critical threat.
Like the US, the UK shares its national threat levels with the general public to keep everyone informed and explain the context for the various increased security measures that may be encountered. UK threat levels are determined by the UK Home Office and are posted on
its website at http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/security/current-threat-level/ .
Information from MI5 about the reasons for the increased threat level and actions the public can take can be found on the MI5 website at http://www.mi5.gov.uk/ .
This situation is receiving extensive media coverage both in the UK and around the world. Visitors here should be aware that the overseas media coverage may have caused family and friends overseas to become concerned for the welfare of their loved ones in the UK. Now is a good time to
let your friends and family know that you are all right.
For further safety and security information, please see the latest worldwide caution on the continuing possibility of terrorist attacks (http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/warden_messages/warden_message_11apr07.html), our warden message on personal security practices (http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/warden_messages/warden_message_19jan07.html), and the Department of State's brochure on safe travel (http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html).
