18 May 2007 State Department Iraq Coordinator Speaks at the Frontline Club in London
On May 18, David Satterfield, Senior Advisor and Coordinator on Iraq, spoke to the Frontline Club in London on "Demystifiying U.S. policy in Iraq."
The event was moderated by Jamie Rubin. Satterfield told the audience that the military surge is designed to buy political space and time for the Iraqis to work our their national future, and that Iraqi political will is the determining factor in the success or failure of rebuilding Iraq. Acknowledging that "the clock is ticking," Satterfield emphasized that security, economic revitalization, and Iraqi political participation are the make-or-break issues at this historic moment. Satterfield also pointed to Syrian and Iranian roles in destabilizing Iraq, and suggested positive steps that those neighboring countries could take to contribute to a solution.
