Dr. Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington DC, met with Ambassador Robert Tuttle on July 11. The meeting was followed by a roundtable discussion with over 30 Embassy representatives. The topic was Dr. Ahmed latest book, Journey into Islam, the Crisis of Globalization, and its recommendations.

One of the world’s leading authorities on contemporary Islam, Dr. Ahmed is a former High Commissioner of Pakistan to Great Britain and has advised Prince Charles and President George W. Bush on Islam.  His numerous books, films and documentaries have won prestigious awards, and his books have been translated into several languages.

The book is compiled from his travels last year with several students on a trip to eight Muslim countries as part of a study sponsored by The Brookings Institution in Washington, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, and American University, to better understand the Muslim world. The group interviewed students and professionals representing many differing religious and political positions, politicians, including President Musharraf of Pakistan, and visited many mosques and madrassas. The book is the product of the analysis of those experiences.
