21 February 2008 Embassy Cultural Affairs Office hosts a performance by “Universes”
| Are they rap? Hip-hop? Poetry? Actually, “Universes” is all that and more. “Universes” is an ensemble of multi-disciplined writers and performers who fuse poetry, theater, jazz, hip-hop, down-home blues and Spanish boleros into spoken-word performances. On February 21 the Embassy's Cultural Affairs Office hosted the group as part of the State Department's Rhythm Road program in conjunction with Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The goal is to promote mutual understanding and cross-cultural awareness by providing an opportunity for international audiences to experience American musical life, and the “Universes” show at the Embassy did just that, to rousing applause from the audience.

The Embassy hosted a full house of more than 160 guests, an eclectic mix including members of an East London Muslim student youth group, a group of students from a socio-economically challenged area of Brighton in Southeast England, and young people from The Southwark Pilgrims program.
There were also representatives from a variety of prestigious arts and performance groups, including Arts Council England, London Centre of Contemporary Music, and The Midi Music Company.
In addition, the group’s visit and the Embassy event were covered extensively by Colourful Radio (Sky Digital) and Black Entertainment Network (BEN).
