Statement by National Security Council Spokesman Mike Hammer on the UK Report "The Road to 2010: Addressing the Nuclear Question in the Twenty First Century"

President Obama welcomes the report presented today by Prime Minister Brown to the Parliament on initiatives to achieve nuclear security, recognizing that the demand for nuclear energy may grow in coming decades and contribute to addressing the pressing challenge of climate change. The President agrees that it is essential to act now, in concert with other nations, to ensure the threat of nuclear terrorism is reduced, as well as to take steps that reinforce the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

We appreciate the strong support by the United Kingdom for the nuclear security conference announced by the President to be held in March 2010 in Washington. We welcome the resolve stated in the report to address, with our international partners, pressing immediate challenges to the nonproliferation regime such as Iran and North Korea. And we support the UK Center for Nuclear Excellence announced in the report that seeks to take near-term steps to better secure existing stocks of nuclear materials, and establishes a long-term commitment to safeguard and effectively provide nuclear fuel services to countries playing by the rules.
