Northern Ireland: Sinn Fein Support for Policing

The United States welcomes the Sinn Fein leadership’s commitment to seek its party’s full support for policing in Northern Ireland. This development is an important step forward in protecting the welfare of all the people of Northern Ireland, as well as a step towards achieving full devolution of power in the North. We look forward to the Sinn Fein party conference in January confirming that it will support policing structures and, most importantly, to seeing real cooperation by all the parties with the police on the ground.

We hope this important decision will be matched by a commitment from all parties to take the necessary steps to ensure that power sharing can be achieved within the timeframe established by the St. Andrews Agreement. We fully support the British and Irish governments’ unflagging efforts to achieve a lasting political settlement in Northern Ireland.
