09 March 2007 Statement by State Department spokesman Sean McCormack on the Northern Ireland Elections
The United States congratulates Northern Ireland on conducting peaceful and successful elections. The voters have sent a clear message that the time for deadlock is over. It is time for local political leaders to stand up the Stormont Assembly and address the interests of all the people of the Province.
We urge Northern Ireland’s newly elected political leaders to seize this historic opportunity to restore local governance. We look forward to the restoration of the Assembly and the Executive. The United States will continue to do all it can to support efforts to create a peaceful and prosperous Northern Ireland.
We commend Prime Minister Tony Blair and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern for their concerted, sustained efforts towards ensuring a lasting peace in Northern Ireland. The United States shares the commitment of the British and Irish Governments in ensuring the full implementation of the St Andrews Agreement.
