Consular Services during London's Olympic Summer 2012

American Citizen & Passport Services

Updated : 24 February 2012

The U.S. Embassy is expecting a busy July and August with thousands of additional U.S. citizens traveling to the United Kingdom for the Olympic Games.  Applicants seeking routine passport renewals through the Embassy in London may encounter delays.  If your passport will expire soon, renewing it now will help ensure you are able to travel as planned.  Most adult passport renewals can be done through the mail.  Processing generally takes 15 business days.  For details on whether you are eligible to renew your passport by mail, please see the passport services by mail section of our website.

If you plan to travel this summer or fall, make sure to check the expiration date on your U.S. passport.  If your passport is expiring soon, don’t delay – renew it now !

When deciding whether to renew your passport now, don’t forget that many countries require your passport to be valid for 3-12 months after the date you enter the country.  You can check the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site  for detailed entry requirements for the countries you will visit.  The Department of State encourages all U.S. citizens traveling or residing abroad to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

When appearing for your appointment at the Embassy, PLEASE do not bring mobile phones or any electronic devices, such as laptops, iPods, memory sticks or electronic key FOBs as they are not allowed within the Embassy.  Also please do not bring large bags, such as backpacks, suitcases or packages to the appointment, as there are no storage facilities on Embassy grounds

For the latest security information, U.S. citizens living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Alerts, Travel Warnings, and health-information resources can be found.  Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S. and Canada or, for callers in other areas by calling a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

Visa Services during the Summer

Updated : 17 February 2012

Nonimmigrant visa services will be limited during the period July through to the end of August 2012.  Travelers requiring visas are, therefore, advised to apply early to avoid disappointment.  The appointment calendar is open through until the end of June.  If you have plans to travel during the summer, book now as appointment availability cannot be guaranteed.  Our call center is open Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 9:00 pm and on Saturday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

If you are a national of one of the 36 Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries you should check your eligibility to enter the United States visa free under the VWP. If you are not qualified, you will require a visa.  If you will be entering the United States by air or sea carrier under the VWP you should also ensure that you have obtained travel authorization under the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to travel.  Although it is possible to register up to 72 hours before departure, we recommend that you register now for summer travel in case the registration is denied and you will require a visa.
