Second Passports

Current regulations prohibit the possession of more than one valid, or potentially valid, passport at any one time unless under circumstances specifically authorized by the Secretary of State. The only justification considered for issuance of a second valid passport is an urgent need for international travel while the bearer's full validity passport is unavailable due to visa processing at other embassies.

As of September 26, 2005, second passports are no longer extendable. If you already have a second passport that is nearing its expiration, you must apply for a new one by following the instructions below. If you apply within one year of your passport's issuance, there is no charge.

Note: You are required to present your valid ten or fiveyear passport to apply for a second passport. If you are unable to do this because your passport is already being processed for a visa at another office, you may not apply for a second passport. If you need to travel before your passport will be returned to you, obtaining an emergency passport may be necessary.

Application Requirements

In addition to the items on our main passport webpage, please bring the following with you when you appear at the Consulate to obtain a second passport:

  • Your valid full ten- or five-year passport: This will be returned to you when you appear at the Consulate.
  • A written request from your company explaining your need for a second passport.
  • Passport application form DS-82: Please ignore pages one and two of the instruction pages, as they do not apply when applying for your passport in the United Kingdom. Form DS-82 must be printed on separate sheets of paper. Do not print this form on front and back of the same sheet; it will not scan properly and you will have to complete a new form at the Consulate. For tips on completing the DS-82, follow this link.
  • Affidavit in Support of Second Passport: Do not sign the affidavit; you must sign it in front of the consular representative.
  • Fees: The application fee is U.S. $75, which is payable at the time of application. The Consulate cannot accept cash or personal checks. We can only accept payment by credit card or International Money Order. Credit cards accepted are Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and Diner's Club.

Checklist of Required Documents for Second Passport:

  • Current U.S. passport
  • Completed form DS-82
  • Two U.S. passport photos
  • Royal Mail Special Delivery pre-paid envelope addressed to yourself
  • Credit/debit card or international money order for payment
