U.S. Consul Congratulates Organizers of Pipefest 2005 and Expresses Pride in American Participants

Cecile Shea, the United States Consul to Edinburgh, has congratulated the organizers of the record breaking Pipefest 2005. "I was there from beginning to end, and it was just fantastic. The logistics of putting together such a large event were stunningly complicated, but the parade went off without a hitch. Clearly, the people in charge had done their homework!"

Ms. Shea in particular noted her pride in the large number of Americans present. "Police from Ohio, sheriffs from Florida, software engineers from Washington State, and even the New Mexico Thistle Club -- it really was a parade of the variety of America. More than that, the fact that 1,000 Americans participated in Pipefest is a symbol of our long and deep ties with Scotland and of the vitality of those ties."

Ms. Shea said she had two abiding memories of the occasion. One was seeing pipers from the Sultanate of Oman, Germany, the U.S. and many other countries socializing and having fun together. "The day was a real testament to the fact that all of us have much more in common than we have separating us. I wish some of the world's hatemongers could have been present to see how similar all of us really are.

"My second memory is coming across the Columbus Ohio Police Pipe Band playing 'God Bless America.' While I am enormously fortunate to be living in one of the world's most beautiful and interesting cities, I'm only human, and I get homesick sometimes. Thank you to all of the Americans who brought a little bit of the States here for me to share."
