Consulate General, Edinburgh
Passport Renewals
You may apply to renew your U.S. passport at any time. If your passport has expired or is about to expire, we strongly recommend that you renew your passport soon. You cannot travel with an expired passport and will be refused airline and ship boarding or entry into another country. Apart from the distress you may experience at not having a valid passport in the event of an emergency, every American abroad should have valid proof of his or her citizenship at all times.
Renewing A Passport Issued Less Than 1 Year Ago
If you are renewing a passport that was issued less than 1 year ago (i.e. replacing an emergency passport or changing your name), use the DS-5504 application form. There is no fee and you are not required to appear in person. Do include your Special Delivery envelope with your application. For instructions on replacing an emergency passport by mail, click here. If it has been more than 1 year since the issue date of your passport, you must follow standard renewal procedures using the DS-82 or DS-11 form. Regular fees apply and applicants under 18 must appear in person.
Adult Renewal
If you are over age 18, are renewing a passport that was issued within the last 15 years, were over the age of 16 when that passport was issued, and your passport is in good condition, you may renew your passport by mail with the U.S. Consulate General in Edinburgh using the DS-82 application form..
