09 December 2005 Ambassador Tuttle’s Presents Civil Rights Books to London School
U.S. Ambassador Robert H. Tuttle presented a 25-volume set of books relating to the civil rights struggle in the United States to a London area school today. The donation of the books coincides with UN Human Rights Day on December 10.
Ambassador Tuttle presented the books to Kingsford Community School in Beckton. The school has an impressive program of teaching citizenship, social responsibility and appreciation for diversity through study of human rights and languages.
The books include both fiction and non-fiction and cover such topics as the U.S. civil rights movement, slavery in the U.S. and the Underground Railroad, the network of clandestine routes that helped runaway slaves escape to freedom. Biographies of prominent African-Americans are also included in the collection.

Upon presenting the books, Ambassador Tuttle told the students and faculty, "Rather than hiding our faults, we in the United States try to openly share them in the hope that others can learn lessons from our experience. I hope that these books will provide you with an interesting way to get to know America better and to understand the importance of always pushing for a higher standard of protection and equality."
