20 November 2006 Speaker of the House of Commons hosts reception in honor of Ambassador Tuttle
On November 20 the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt. Hon. Michael Martin, MP for Glasgow, North East and the members of the British-American Parliamentary Group hosted a reception in honor of U.S. Ambassador Robert H. Tuttle at Speakers House. The annual event is an expression of gratitude from British Members of Parliament for the friendship between the United States and the United Kingdom, and U.S. Embassy support for activities that continually build upon this relationship.
The British-American Parliamentary Group (BAPG) is the largest all-party, bi-lateral group in the UK Parliament. It has some 644 members from both Houses of Parliament. Its Chairman is the Prime Minister, its Joint Presidents are the Lord Chancellor and the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Co-Vice Chair are normally of Ministerial and Shadow Ministerial office.
The purpose and the achievement of the British-American Parliamentary Group is friendship and understanding between Senators and Members of Congress in Washington and MPs and Peers in Westminster. It was formed shortly before the Second World War to promote closer relations and understanding between Members of both Houses of Parliament and Members of both Houses of the United States Congress by providing opportunities for discussion on problems common to both countries and for the exchange of visits and information.
