Ambassador Tuttle visits Canterbury and Sandwich

This day-long visit was part of an ongoing program of travel to engage with communities throughout the United Kingdom. The Ambassador began the day at The Canterbury High School, a state school of 1,100 students that has achieved outstanding results in helping students largely from an area of socio-economic disadvantage to realize their full potential. Ambassador Tuttle addressed a range of questions from students on his role, American life and foreign policy issues.

In the afternoon, the Ambassador visited Pfizer's Global Research & Development facility in Sandwich. This multi-billion dollar state of the art medical research center is the largest in Europe and employs over 3,600 people. Company officials provided a tour of the facility and described some of the innovative research being conducted at the site, including a very encouraging drug for HIV/AIDS.

In the evening, Ambassador Tuttle addressed a packed house of 270 students and faculty of the University of Kent at Canterbury. The Ambassador's speech highlighted the substantial U.S. policy achievements on values-based issues such as HIV/AIDS, malaria eradication and poverty reduction through increasing free trade. A vibrant Q&A session covered the gamut from Iraq, Somalia and the War on Terror to U.S. relations with Russia, China and the EU.
